An ice cave and snowmobile tour in Iceland
An ice cave and snowmobile tour in Iceland usually means Langjökull: a fast ride across the second-largest ice cap, then a cave or a tunnel in the ice. Here is how the tours differ.

Why snowmobiles and ice caves go together
An ice cave and snowmobile tour in Iceland swaps the slow super jeep approach for speed. Instead of walking to the edge of an outlet glacier, you ride across the top of an ice cap and visit the ice from above. The combined tours compared on this page all run on Langjökull, in the west of the country. The appeal is simple: the ride itself is half the adventure, and the ice at the end is the reward.
Langjökull is big. Its tunnel operator says it is the second largest glacier in Iceland, covering about 950 km2, most of it between 1200 and 1300 m above sea level, and measuring around 55 km from north to south but only 20 km across.14 A 2020 study of Icelandic glaciers gives a smaller 2019 area of about 835 km2, a reminder that the ice is shrinking.5
Different kinds of ice wait at the end of the ride. Some tours stop at a natural ice cave in the glacier; others combine the snowmobile with the man-made tunnel inside Langjökull. Both are cold, both need warm clothes, and the differences matter for families and for anyone hoping for a wild cave rather than a lit corridor.

From Geysir to a natural cave
The tour this page sells starts behind the Geysir visitor centre, about 1.5 hours' drive from Reykjavík; transport to the meeting point is not included. A super truck carries the group from Geysir up to Langjökull, where guides fit the gear and teach the basics before a one-hour snowmobile ride that climbs to 1450 meters above sea level.
The ride ends at a natural ice cave, explored on foot before the return to the snowmobile base and the truck back to Geysir. The whole tour lasts 4.5-5 hours, starts from $311 and is rated 4.37 from 135 reviews. Expect to spend most of the day outdoors and moving, with the cave as the quiet, cold finale.
A couple of practical points from the listing are easy to miss. Only riders with a valid driver's license may steer a sled, and if your group mixes shared and solo riders you need separate bookings for each type. Decide before booking who will drive and who will ride behind.

Which snowmobile tour?
Decide by transport, ice and passengers
It rides to a natural ice cave and meets at Geysir.
The tunnel is maintained year-round.8
It includes the transfer and lasts 10 hours.
Licensed drivers steer; others share a sled.3
It reaches a Langjökull ice cave from Gullfoss in 4 hours.
There are no safety harnesses on the sled so passengers must hold on by their own strength. All those intending to drive the snowmobile must have a valid drivers license
The tunnel combination from Húsafell
The other classic combination meets at Húsafell and pairs a snowmobile ride with the man-made ice tunnel. Its operator describes a 40-minute ride, 20 minutes each way, and about an hour inside the tunnel.10 On GetYourGuide the combo lasts 3.5 hours, starts from $317 and is rated 4.56 from 91 reviews.
The price is for 1 person on a snowmobile shared by 2, with a solo rider option on request, and only 1 passenger aged 8-15 can be booked with each adult driver. Into the Glacier's own page adds that drivers must be 17 or older with a valid license and that guests without licenses cannot outnumber those with them.3
The tunnel itself is the predictable part of the day. Its operator gives it as 500 meters long and maintained year-round, with the temperature inside around 0°C whatever the season.11812 If you want the more predictable walk inside glacier ice after the ride, this is the combination to choose; if you want a natural cave, choose the Geysir tour.

A snowmobile and ice cave tour from Reykjavík
Without a car, book a snowmobile and ice cave tour from Reykjavík with the transfer included. One listing picks you up in the city, drives to Skjól between Geysir and Gullfoss, takes a super truck to Langjökull and rides snowmobiles up to 1,450 meters above sea level before a natural ice cave. It lasts 10 hours, starts from $400 and is rated 4.56 from 153 reviews.
Arctic Adventures' own page says Langjökull takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach from Reykjavík, and lists its snowmobile tours as available all year.1314 A 10-hour day makes sense when the alternative is renting a car only for this trip.
Another option starts at Gullfoss and combines a Langjökull ice cave with a snowmobile ride in 4 hours, with guides speaking English and Icelandic; it is rated 4.08 from 138 reviews. For those who would rather sit than steer, a glacier monster truck tour from Gullfoss reaches an ice cave on Langjökull in 4 hours and is rated 4.77 from 83 reviews.
Licences, ages and sharing a sled
Snowmobile tours have rules that walking tours do not. Every operator here requires a valid driver's license to drive, and Into the Glacier sets the driver's minimum age at 17.3 Arctic Adventures lists a minimum age of 8 with drivers from 17, and a guide to snowmobile ratio of 1:6.14
Most tours are built around sharing. Arctic Adventures designs its tour for two persons sharing a snowmobile, and children as young as 8 can ride as passengers.152 Into the Glacier notes that there are no safety harnesses on the sled, so passengers must hold on by their own strength.9
That last point is worth a thought if you are bringing a child. A long ride across bumpy snow takes grip and stamina, so make sure younger passengers are comfortable holding on, wear good gloves and know they can ask the guide to slow down.
Summer and winter on the ice cap
Unlike the natural caves at the lagoon, snowmobiling on Langjökull is not a winter-only activity. Arctic Adventures says the glacier is open for snowmobile activities all year round, and lists its tours as available all year.1614 Summer brings long days and softer snow; winter brings short light, colder air and a wilder feel on the ice.
The season also changes the logistics around the tunnel. The rough gravel road from Húsafell up to the Klaki base camp at the glacier's edge is only open from 1 June to 15 October, and the glacier vehicle ride to the tunnel takes about 30 minutes each way in summer against 75 minutes each way in winter.1718 In winter you spend more of the day getting onto the ice.
Langjökull is not the only ice cap with snowmobiles. Visit South Iceland lists guided snow scooter and snowmobile tours on Mýrdalsjökull, the glacier above the Katla volcano near Vík, alongside year-round ice cave explorations there.1920 If your trip is built around the south coast rather than the Golden Circle, ask the Vík operators what they can combine on the day.
What to wear on the ice cap
On a snowmobile you sit still in the wind for long stretches; dress warmer than you would for a hike. The Geysir listing asks for warm clothes, a waterproof shell, sturdy boots, gloves and a warm wool or fleece hat. Safetravel's general rule applies: wool and synthetics, no cotton.21
Inside the ice it stays cold and damp. The tunnel's operator gives about 0°C inside, unaffected by the season, and the US National Park Service describes glacier caves with icy water dripping from their roofs.1222 A thin, warm hat that fits under a helmet and a spare pair of gloves are cheap insurance.
Weather on an ice cap can change fast. Visit South Iceland says weather on Mýrdalsjökull, the other glacier where snowmobile tours run, shifts rapidly all year round, and the same caution fits Langjökull.19 Dress for the worst hour of the day, not the first.
